
How to Install a CCTV Camera in Kenya 2025— Simple Step-by-Step Guide
A correct install gives reliable footage and fewer headaches. Use this checklist for a single camera or scale it for multiple units.
Tools & materials
- CCTV camera (IP or analog), mount, screws
- Drill, ladder, screwdriver, cable ties
- Ethernet cable (Cat5e/6) for IP / RG59 for analog
- PoE switch or injector (for PoE cameras) or 12V DC adapter
- Smartphone or monitor for testing

Step 1 — Plan coverage
- Walk the area, identify points of entry and blind spots.
- Mount at 2.5–3.5 m height for vandal resistance but clear face capture.
Step 2 — Run cables
- For PoE/IP: run Cat5e/6 from camera to PoE switch/NVR location.
- For analog: run RG59 coax + power or Siamese cable.
- Use conduit/trunking where cables are exposed.

Step 3 — Mount camera and connect power/data
- Drill holes, fix the mount, attach camera, but don’t tighten fully.
- Connect PoE cable or power cable and test power-up.
Step 4 — Aim, focus and test
- Open live feed on monitor/app and adjust angle, focus, and zoom.
- Tighten mount screws once satisfied.
Step 5 — Configure recording & alerts
- Set recording mode (continuous or motion).
- Set retention period based on HDD size.
- Configure motion zones and push alerts to your phone.
Security & final checks
- Change default admin credentials.
- Update firmware.
- Test remote viewing and simulate motion for alerts.
